Kolkata, March 13 (NationPress) Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, declared the establishment of five new cultural and development boards aimed at supporting the Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Scheduled Caste (SC) communities within the state.

The administration under CM Banerjee has initiated boards for one SC, two ST, and two OBC communities in Bengal.

The ST communities designated for these boards are the Munda and Kora, while the OBCs identified include Kumbhakar and Sadgope. The selected SC community is Dom.

This announcement is viewed as significant amid ongoing tensions between the central government and the West Bengal administration, particularly following an incident involving President Droupadi Murmu—who has tribal roots—during her visit to the state.

In her announcement regarding the formation of these boards, CM Banerjee emphasized that these communities are vital to the rich cultural tapestry of Bengal.

“I extend my warmest congratulations to all,” CM Banerjee expressed in a statement shared on her official social media platform on Friday.

“These boards will aim to preserve their distinct languages and traditions while enhancing access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. They will protect customary rights and foster socio-economic advancement,” she elaborated.

CM Banerjee also highlighted that back in 2013, her administration had established several similar cultural and development boards to promote the comprehensive development of marginalized communities across the state.

“Our pledge to 'Ma, Mati, and Manush' reflects our commitment to ensuring no community is overlooked. Our objective is clear: to bring joy to every individual through inclusive progress and steadfast support,” she concluded.

However, leaders from the BJP have criticized this announcement as a mere strategy to divert attention ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections later this year, terming it an empty gesture amidst the controversy regarding the breach of protocol during the President’s visit.

Point of View

It is essential to recognize the potential impact of this initiative on marginalized communities in West Bengal. While the establishment of cultural and development boards may offer much-needed support, the timing of this announcement raises questions about its motivations, particularly in the context of upcoming elections.
