Manipur Initiates Phased Resettlement for Ethnic Violence Victims

Imphal, March 16 (NationPress) - The process of resettling Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) impacted by ethnic violence in Manipur has officially commenced in a phased approach, according to the state’s Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, who addressed the Assembly on Monday.
In response to an inquiry by Congress MLA Thokchom Lokeshwar Singh, the Minister stated that the government is taking systematic measures to rehabilitate those who have been displaced due to the recent ethnic unrest.
Previously, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh disclosed a budget allocation of Rs 350 crore aimed at supporting women who suffered due to the recent ethnic conflicts.
The Chief Minister noted that this financial assistance is anticipated to benefit approximately 3.5 lakh women across Manipur.
In a recent meeting in New Delhi, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the Chief Minister consulted with Union Home Minister Amit Shah about critical matters affecting the state, particularly focusing on the rehabilitation of internally displaced individuals.
Addressing another question from Congress legislator Surjakumar Okram, the Home Minister confirmed that 1,435 cadres of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) have been verified up to this point, each receiving a monthly stipend of Rs 6,000.
The UNLF faction, led by Pambei, signed a tripartite peace agreement with the Government of India and the Manipur government on November 29, 2023. The Home Minister emphasized that this peace agreement is currently active and the foundational rules for its implementation have been established.
The Government of India has disbursed funds totaling Rs 5.83 crore in five installments, covering the duration from December 2023 to April 2024.
In a separate matter, the Chief Minister addressed a motion raised by Congress Legislature Party leader Keisham Meghachandra Singh concerning the recent hailstorm, stating that he has instructed the relevant Deputy Commissioners to aid families affected by this disaster.
He mentioned that geotagged photographs of the assessed areas will be made available by the authorities, with priority given to damaged homes, followed by an evaluation of crop losses.
