New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) Neena Malhotra, Secretary (South) of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), engaged with Suriname's departing Ambassador to India, Arunkoemar Hardien, in New Delhi on Tuesday to assess the advancements in their bilateral relationship. "Secretary (South) Dr Neena Malhotra hosted a farewell lunch for Ambassador Arunkoemar Hardien from the Republic of Suriname as he concluded his tenure in India. She reviewed the progress made in their bilateral relations and wished him all the best in his future endeavors," stated Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), on X.
After his posting in India, Arunkoemar Hardien presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 26, 2022.
On November 24, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a phone conversation with his Suriname counterpart Melvin Bouva, extending his congratulations on the 50th anniversary of Suriname's independence.
"I had the pleasure of speaking with FM Melvin Bouva of Suriname. I conveyed my best wishes for the 50th anniversary of Suriname’s Independence and look forward to strengthening our partnership and people-to-people connections," posted the EAM on X.
In September, EAM Jaishankar met Bouva in New York during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Following their meeting, EAM Jaishankar shared on X, "It was a pleasure to meet FM Melvin Bouva of Suriname today. I valued his warm sentiments regarding our relations."
In June, Suriname received its first shipment of fruit processing machinery, funded under a USD 1 million Small and Medium Enterprises grant announced by India.
"The first shipment of fruit processing machinery, funded by the USD 1 million SME grant announced by EAM S Jaishankar, has arrived in Suriname. This processing facility will enhance the value addition of local agricultural products once operational," reported the Embassy of India in Suriname on X.
India had committed USD 1 million as grant support for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) projects during EAM Jaishankar's dialogue with his then-Surinamese counterpart Albert Ramdin at the India-Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) meeting in Guyana on April 21, 2023.
India and Suriname enjoy a close, warm, and friendly relationship, bolstered by cultural and people-to-people interactions established by the Indian diaspora's presence over the last one and a half centuries. Both nations have established bilateral frameworks to enhance cooperation, including Ministerial-level Joint Commission Meetings and a Joint Working Group on Agriculture.
According to the MEA, both countries have actively collaborated on development partnerships, with India providing Line of Credits (LOCs) and Grants-in-Aid.
