Hong Kong, Nov 29 (NationPress) John Lee, the chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), along with key officials from the HKSAR government and civil service, attended a memorial service at the government headquarters on Saturday morning to honor the victims of the tragic residential building fire in Tai Po.
In a show of respect, the national flag and the HKSAR flag were displayed at half-mast across all government buildings, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
The Hong Kong Police Force is set to undertake a thorough evidence collection and investigation into the fire incident at Wang Fuk Court, which is expected to last three to four weeks, according to Chris Tang Ping-Keung, the secretary for security of the HKSAR government, who addressed the media on Friday.
He stated, "The fire is believed to have initially ignited in the lower-level perimeter nets of Wang Cheong House, quickly engulfing foam boards and spreading to adjacent structures. This led to shattered glass, a rapid escalation of the fire, and widespread indoor flames, culminating in a significant disaster with multiple simultaneous ignitions. The high temperatures consumed the bamboo scaffolding, resulting in flaming debris igniting other scaffolding nets," explained Tang.
According to the security chief, firefighting, rescue, and search operations concluded at 10:18 a.m. on Friday.
The devastating fire has resulted in the loss of 128 lives, with around 200 individuals still missing, Tang noted, emphasizing that it is possible more bodies may be discovered as the police conduct their investigation.
In total, 391 fire engine sorties, 185 ambulance sorties, and 2,311 personnel from fire and ambulance services were deployed. Twelve firefighters sustained injuries, and Ho Wai-ho, from the Sha Tin Fire Station, tragically lost his life while on duty, stated Andy Yeung Yan-kin, the director of Fire Services of the HKSAR government.
