Hong Kong, Nov 28 (NationPress) The tragic death toll from a catastrophic fire that engulfed a residential neighborhood in Hong Kong has now reached 94, according to officials from the Fire Department.

As reported by the Fire Services Department on Thursday, 72 individuals sustained injuries in the blaze and were transported to hospitals for medical care, among them were eight firefighters. Alarmingly, over 200 residents remain unaccounted for.

The Fire Services Department has deployed a fleet of 304 fire engines and rescue vehicles, utilizing drones to monitor heat levels and mitigate the risk of rekindling. They have successfully extinguished flames in four of the impacted buildings and have managed to contain the fire in the remaining three, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

The affected residential complex, known as Wang Fuk Court, consists of eight buildings, all shrouded in green mesh and scaffolding due to an extensive renovation project. Three individuals involved in the renovation have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, as the police probe suggests that flammable materials may have contributed to the rapid fire spread.

Earlier, Hong Kong's Chief Executive John Lee stated that firefighters' relentless efforts have gradually brought the fire at Wang Fuk Court under control.

During a press briefing, Lee noted that approximately 279 people are still missing, while 29 individuals remain hospitalized, including seven in critical condition. He expressed his deep sorrow over the dire situation.

According to Lee, three buildings showed no visible flames from the exterior, while four others only exhibited sporadic fire spots.

He emphasized that the government would mobilize all available resources to support rescue operations. Lee has directed various departments to execute comprehensive tasks, including extinguishing the fire, rescuing trapped residents, treating the injured, and providing emotional support to families, alongside a thorough investigation into the incident.

The Fire Services Department was alerted to the incident around 2:51 p.m. local time on Wednesday. Due to the intensity of the fire, the department elevated the alarm to a No. 5 fire alert at 6:22 p.m. local time, with rescue operations still ongoing.

In one of the temporary shelters, personnel from the Home Affairs Department, Civil Aid Service, Care Teams, and the Police Force collaborated efficiently, each fulfilling their designated roles.

Lam Yick Kuen, a member of the Tai Po Care Team and district councillor, reported that numerous organizations and individuals have generously donated supplies, showcasing solidarity and compassion during this crisis.
