Mission Livelihood: 10 Crore Rural Women Participating in 90 Lakh Self-Help Groups

New Delhi, Dec 20 (NationPress) Over 10.05 crore women from rural households have been successfully mobilized into 90.87 lakh self-help groups (SHGs) under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), as disclosed in Parliament on Friday.

Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, the Minister of State for Rural Development, stated in a written response to the Rajya Sabha that the cumulative bank loans disbursed to SHGs by November 2024 have reached Rs 9.71 lakh crore.

The MoS highlighted that the mission is operational in 7,138 blocks across 742 districts in 28 States and 6 Union Territories.

During the last three years, a total of 21.54 lakh SHGs have been formed and supported under the DAY-NRLM, he added.

DAY-NRLM allocates funds to establish a resource base for community institutions, enhancing their institutional and financial management capabilities to attract traditional bank financing.

This includes a Revolving Fund ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 per SHG and a Community Investment Fund of up to Rs 2.50 lakh per SHG. The total Capitalisation Support provided, including the Revolving Fund and Community Investment Fund, amounts to Rs 48,290 crore.

To lower the effective bank loan costs for women SHGs, DAY-NRLM offers interest subvention on bank loans.

Additionally, in response to another inquiry, the MoS mentioned that the Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP), a sub-scheme under DAY-NRLM, aids SHG women and their family members in establishing small businesses. SVEP has successfully supported 3.13 lakh rural enterprises.

Regarding the engagement of SHG women, the MoS noted that they serve as Banking Correspondents Sakhis, facilitating access to banking services such as deposits, credit, remittances, pensions, and insurance.

A total of 1,35,127 Banking Correspondents Sakhi/Digipay Sakhi have been deployed with the assistance of DAY-NRLM. Under the Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETI), another sub-scheme of DAY-NRLM, 53.89 lakh youth have received training, with 38.35 lakh having found employment to date, as stated by the MoS.
