Mumbai, May 22 (NationPress) In accordance with legal requirements, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has put forth a proposal for the establishment of a Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) as stipulated under Sections 33 and 34 (I) of the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002.
This initiative is a compliance action mandated by the O&M Act. As per Section 34, the Central government has the authority to assemble a Fare Fixation Committee periodically to provide fare recommendations, ensuring a transparent and legally compliant fare governance structure.
After receiving approval from the Maharashtra government, the MMRDA will submit the proposal to the Union government for the formation of the Fare Fixation Committee for Metro Lines 2A & 7.
Initially, the fares for Metro Lines 2A and 7 were set by the Metro Railway Administration at the launch of operations on April 2, 2022. With an impressive weekday ridership of 2.65 lakh, these Metro lines are crucial to the city's daily transportation framework.
According to the MMRDA's announcement on Thursday, “The proposal for a Fare Fixation Committee is a legal necessity under the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002. It does not imply any immediate fare changes but aims to ensure that our operations remain transparent, compliant with the law, and aligned with established governance standards. The Committee will facilitate a structured and independent review process, reinforcing our dedication to accountable public transportation management.”
The request to the Union government is solely for the establishment of this committee, which will examine the current fare structure and propose frameworks in accordance with statutory guidelines.
The creation of the FFC serves as a crucial governance mechanism and does not automatically indicate any fare adjustments.
“MMRDA remains committed to delivering commuter-focused, affordable, and sustainable metro services across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region while adhering to regulatory requirements in every aspect of administration and operation,” the release stated.
The Fare Fixation Committee will comprise a Chairperson and two additional members. A candidate is eligible to be appointed as the Chairperson only if they are or have been a High Court judge.
Both the Central and state governments will nominate one member each to the Fare Fixation Committee.
