Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday, 10 July jointly launched the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), formalising a wide-ranging bilateral partnership spanning athlete development, sports science, coaching, technology, and infrastructure. The launch marks one of the most substantive people-to-people initiatives to emerge from the two nations' Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

What the Roadmap Covers

The newly unveiled roadmap extends well beyond cricket to encompass institutional exchanges, training programmes, and technological collaboration across multiple sporting disciplines. Officials indicated that the framework will promote joint efforts in sports science, coaching methodologies, and infrastructure development, with both governments expected to facilitate partnerships between their respective sporting bodies.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan attended the event alongside Australian cricketing legends Steve Waugh and Lisa Sthalekar, underlining the cultural weight attached to the occasion.

What PM Modi Said at the MCG

Speaking at the historic ground, Modi described the MCG as a venue that stirs deep emotion for every Indian, given the storied cricketing history between the two nations. 'After coming to the Melbourne Cricket Ground, any Indian naturally thinks of two things: the thrill of an India-Australia cricket match and the feeling that in both our countries, cricket is not just a game but a shared passion. But today, there is no pressure here; today there is only happiness and the excitement of our shared friendship,' he said.

Launching the roadmap, Modi stressed that sport had evolved into a structural pillar of bilateral ties. 'Sports is a strong link in the relations between India and Australia. Today, it gives me great joy to launch the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap alongside Prime Minister Albanese. Under this, we will strengthen cooperation not only in cricket but also in other sports,' he said.

Modi also posted on X: 'Wonderful to visit the Melbourne Cricket Ground with PM Albanese. The passion for sport continues to bring the people of India and Australia closer.'

Khelo India and Grassroots Sporting Push

The Prime Minister highlighted India's domestic sporting transformation as a foundation for the new partnership. Citing the Khelo India Programme, he said sporting talent was no longer concentrated in a handful of metropolitan centres. 'Through the Khelo India Programme, people from small towns, villages, and ordinary families are getting a platform to dream big. Today, sporting talent in India is not limited to a few big cities. It is emerging from every corner and every background of the country,' he said.

Commonwealth Games 2030, Olympics 2036 in Focus

Modi used the occasion to underscore the strategic timing of the roadmap, pointing to a cluster of major international sporting events on the horizon. India is set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and is actively pursuing the bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games. Brisbane is meanwhile confirmed to host the 2032 Olympics. 'To host these global events, sports infrastructure will be prepared on a mega scale. This means that in the coming years, we will get numerous new opportunities to learn from each other and work together,' he said.

The MCG visit formed part of Modi's three-day visit to Australia and reinforced the two countries' intent to deepen cooperation beyond traditional domains of trade and defence. With two Olympic cycles and a Commonwealth Games now in shared planning horizons, the roadmap is expected to drive sustained institutional engagement in the years ahead.
