Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 5 July 2025 inaugurated the new terminal building at Jodhpur Airport, marking a landmark expansion in Rajasthan's aviation infrastructure. Key Features of the New Terminal

The newly built terminal spans over 23,000 square metres and is equipped to handle 20 lakh passengers annually — a substantial leap from the airport's previous capacity. Architecturally, the structure draws from Rajasthan's rich cultural heritage, incorporating traditional motifs and design elements alongside modern passenger amenities.

Sustainability has been central to the terminal's design. The building integrates energy-efficient systems, water conservation measures, and green building practices, positioning it as one of the more environmentally responsible additions to India's expanding aviation network.

UDAN Scheme Revamped at the Event

During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi also launched a revised version of the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme. The revamped programme aims to operationalise more airports, improve air access to underserved regions, and consolidate India's aviation ecosystem over the coming decade. The original UDAN scheme, launched in 2016, has already connected dozens of smaller cities to the national air network, though critics have noted uneven implementation across states.

Impact on Jodhpur and the Marwar Region

Officials expect the upgraded infrastructure to meaningfully improve domestic and regional connectivity for Jodhpur and neighbouring districts. The city, already a prominent tourism hub known for its forts, palaces, and the blue-hued old quarter, stands to attract higher footfall from both leisure and business travellers.

The Marwar region, which encompasses parts of Jodhpur, Barmer, and Jaisalmer districts, has historically been underserved by air infrastructure relative to its economic and cultural significance. The new terminal is expected to open fresh avenues for commerce, investment, and employment in this belt.
