Kolkata, March 3 (NationPress) A momo vendor tragically took his own life on Tuesday, reportedly after discovering that his name had been removed from the electoral rolls of West Bengal following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

The individual has been named as Gouranga De, a resident of ward number 11 in Jalpaiguri town. He lived in a rented accommodation with his family and leaves behind a wife and son.

The family asserts that he had been voting for nearly 40 years; however, his name was absent from the 2002 voter list. He was summoned for a hearing during the SIR procedure.

He submitted the necessary information and documentation at that time. After the final voters' list was made public on February 27, it was revealed that Gouranga's name had been excluded from the list, marked with 'Deleted' next to it.

Family members and local sources indicated that he had been distressed ever since the removal of his name from the electoral records.

The landlord of Gouranga's rental property stated, "He was visibly anxious following the deletion of his name. He kept questioning what would happen to him. The body was found this morning. What will become of this family now?"

The deceased's wife shared with local reporters, "He had no parents or grandparents to provide additional information. All the other documents presented during the SIR hearing were submitted. Yet, his name was taken off the list. Then this tragedy occurred today."

Upon receiving the news, Saikat Chatterjee, the Chairman of Jalpaiguri Municipality, rushed to the scene. He noted that Gouranga had reached out to him after his name was removed, and he assisted him in filling out form number 6 online.

Saikat remarked, "This is an incredibly sorrowful incident. The SIR process is jeopardizing lives and infringing on democratic rights. The Election Commission and the central government need to be held accountable for this situation."

The police have since retrieved the body and sent it for autopsy.

An inquiry into the occurrence has been initiated.
