Kolkata, Dec 15 (NationPress) A tragic incident has unfolded as another individual has taken their life, allegedly driven by the fear stemming from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of the voter list conducted by the Election Commission in West Bengal's Nadia district, as reported by the police on Monday.

An elderly man residing in the Ranaghat area has ended his life. The victim has been identified as Sushanta Biswas (60). According to his family, he committed suicide by hanging himself at home due to this profound fear early on Monday morning.

Authorities revealed that Sushanta Biswas was a resident of Matikumra Madhyapara under the Dhantala police station in Ranaghat and was employed in Kolkata.

His family stated that Sushanta had been living in a state of anxiety since the SIR process commenced statewide. His worries were compounded by the absence of his name from the 2002 voter list. He even refrained from going outside. Despite the reassurances from neighbors, his anxiety only intensified. He became increasingly depressed, fearing that his name would be omitted from the voter list, which might force him to leave his home and relocate.

A family member mentioned that Sushanta had completed the enumeration form.

His wife, Namita Biswas, shared, "He was consumed by fear. He had nearly stopped communicating. We attempted to clarify matters, but he fixated on the SIR. He would often say, ‘If they take me to jail, I will get a six-year sentence’. My mother-in-law's name is on the 2002 list. Our names were removed because we were living away. This morning, I discovered him hanging with a towel around his neck."

A senior officer from the Ranaghat Police District stated, "The body has been retrieved and sent for autopsy. It has been confirmed that he died by suicide after enduring days of fear regarding his name's absence from the 2002 voter list. A case has been initiated, and an investigation is currently in progress."

Just a few days prior, another individual similarly took their life in the same district, also allegedly due to the fear surrounding the Election Commission's SIR process.
