Bhopal, Nov 25 (NationPress) In light of the extensive backlash against senior IAS officer Santosh Verma for his contentious remarks on Brahmin girls, Madhya Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla asserted on Thursday that comments targeting any specific community will be firmly rejected.
Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, a prominent Brahmin figure from Rewa district in the Vindhya region, criticized Verma's statement, labeling it as extremely “objectionable” and “insensitive”, which threatens social harmony.
“A remark aimed against women, regardless of their community, signifies a perverted mindset. Such statements from a high-ranking officer not only disrupt social peace but also cast doubt on the dignity of the administration,” Shukla expressed on X.
He emphasized that the government's position on such critical matters is unequivocal, and the officer has been asked to explain his statements.
“Appropriate measures will be taken if the officer's reply does not meet expectations,” he warned.
Notably, the Madhya Pradesh government issued a stern show-cause notice to senior IAS Verma on Wednesday for his controversial public comments questioning the persistence of caste-based reservations.
Verma, currently serving as Deputy Secretary in the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, has been directed to provide a written explanation within seven days, with a warning that failure to respond could lead to unilateral departmental action without further notice.
The controversy ignited on November 22, when Verma, during a literary event in Bhopal, allegedly stated that reservations had “served their original purpose” and are now being “exploited as a permanent political tool”.
Footage of the address quickly circulated on social media, triggering an immediate outcry from Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and OBC organizations, along with unexpected protests from Brahmin groups alleging that the officer “insulted constitutional guarantees”.
By Monday morning, demonstrators from various social groups had gathered outside Vallabh Bhawan—the state secretariat—burning effigies and demanding an FIR under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act as well as Verma's immediate suspension.
Protest signs declared “Bureaucrats cannot rewrite the Constitution” and “Protect Babasaheb's legacy”, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
