Mumbai, Aug 13 (NationPress) In light of the Supreme Court's ruling regarding the relocation of stray dogs to shelters in the Delhi-NCR region, veteran actress and politician Nafisa Ali expressed her deep concern, stating that the initiative to remove dogs from Delhi roads is utterly devastating and described it as a disaster in progress.
Nafisa took to Instagram to share several images of herself feeding stray dogs at a beach in Goa.
She remarked, “I cannot envision my life without dogs. Street dogs are incredibly kind and loving. The Supreme Court of India’s decision to eliminate dogs from Delhi roads is extremely troubling.”
“They typically live for about 14 years. Animals act on instinct. This situation is a disaster waiting to happen,” she continued.
The renowned actress reflected on how her months of isolation during the Covid lockdown and her recovery from cancer allowed her to connect with dogs on Morjim beach in Goa.
“The lockdown was challenging and solitary, but caring for the beach dogs provided a sense of purpose and comfort. Feeding them each evening and interacting with them made the isolation much more manageable. #delhidogs,” she noted.
A bench led by Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan mandated that civic bodies throughout Delhi-NCR quickly capture all stray dogs and transfer them to shelters, citing serious public safety concerns and an increasing risk of rabies.
The court described the current scenario as “grim” and stressed the need for swift action to ensure the safety of children, women, and the elderly on the streets.
Instructing the MCD, NDMC, and civic agencies in Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad to eliminate stray dogs from the streets entirely, the Supreme Court warned that any organization hindering this effort would face severe legal repercussions.
The court has directed these civic agencies to commence the capture of all stray dogs in their areas and transport them to designated shelters. If such shelters do not exist, authorities must construct them promptly and report on the infrastructure to the Supreme Court within eight weeks.
