Andhra Pradesh eyes major gold output as Naidu flags Jonnagiri fields
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday, 15 May expressed strong confidence that the state is poised to emerge as a significant force in India's gold production landscape, anchored by the Jonnagiri Gold Fields (JGF) in Kurnool district. Naidu made the remarks at an event in Puttaparthi where foundation stones were laid for several key defence and aerospace projects.
Jonnagiri Gold Fields: The Numbers
The Chief Minister stated that Jonnagiri Gold Fields is projected to produce 600 kilograms of gold in its first year of operations, with output expected to climb to 1,500 kilograms in the second year. Drawing a pointed comparison, Naidu said: 'In the past, the mention of gold brought to mind KGF; now, it signifies JGF — the Jonnagiri Gold Fields.' The remark signals the state government's intent to position Andhra Pradesh as a credible rival to established gold-producing regions.
AMCA Facility and Defence Push in Puttaparthi
The centrepiece of Friday's event was the foundation-laying ceremony for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme facility in Puttaparthi, being developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh joined Naidu at the ceremony. The AMCA project is being established with an investment of ₹15,803 crore across nearly 650 acres and is expected to generate employment for around 7,500 people. Approvals for the project were granted within 36 days, which Naidu described as 'jet speed.' Foundation stones were also laid for facilities involving Bharat Forge, HFCL, and Bharat Dynamics Limited, as well as for a 'Drone City' in Kurnool district. Nine MoUs were signed with companies in the defence and aerospace sectors at the event.
Andhra Pradesh as a Strategic Defence Corridor
Naidu outlined a broader vision for Andhra Pradesh as a multi-domain strategic hub: space capabilities centred at Sriharikota, missile capabilities at Nagayalanka, defence manufacturing at Puttaparthi, and naval capabilities anchored at Visakhapatnam. He described Operation Sindoor as a 'proud example' of India's growing technological strength and the success of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in the defence sector. Naidu added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership has accelerated India's push toward self-reliance in next-generation defence technologies.
Rayalaseema's Industrial Transformation
The Chief Minister also addressed the broader economic revival of the Rayalaseema region, historically known as the 'Land of Diamonds' (Ratanala Seema) but long burdened by drought. He claimed the coalition government has begun reversing that trajectory through a comprehensive action plan. An investment of ₹1 lakh crore is being directed toward transforming Rayalaseema into a premier horticulture hub, with every acre of land targeted for irrigation access. The Kadapa Steel Plant is set to launch in June and is slated for completion by December 2027. The region is also being developed as a hub for solar, wind, and pumped storage projects, as well as cement and steel plants. The Kopparthy Industrial Node will be developed into an electronics manufacturing hub, a Royal Enfield plant is planned for Tirupati, and a Space City is to be developed near Sriharikota. Naidu also noted that the Kia manufacturing facility in Rayalaseema is currently producing 1.8 million cars, with vehicles exported to 80 countries worldwide.
What Comes Next
With the AMCA facility expected to catalyse further defence-sector investment and the Jonnagiri Gold Fields ramping up production, Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself at the intersection of mineral wealth and strategic manufacturing. Whether the state can sustain this trajectory will depend on execution — particularly on timelines for the Kadapa Steel Plant, Drone City, and the broader Rayalaseema irrigation push.
