Dhaka, Dec 15 (NationPress) Amid escalating political unrest in Bangladesh, Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, the student faction of the National Citizen Party (NCP), staged a blockade at the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka on Monday. They demanded the resignation of Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the Home Affairs Advisor of the interim government, according to local media reports.
The protestors accused the Home Advisor of neglecting his duty to uphold law and order and failing to apprehend the individuals behind the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi, the spokesperson for the radical group Inqilab Mancha.
This blockade caused significant traffic disruptions in the area as they insisted on the swift capture of the assailants involved in the attack.
“We demand the prompt arrest of the attackers who harmed Hadi. Moreover, we call for the resignation of the Home Advisor due to the deteriorating law and order situation in the country,” stated Abu Bakar Majumdar, convenor of the student wing of the NCP, as reported by Bangladeshi news outlet UNB.
Earlier that day, leaders from the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) initiated a siege at the Home Advisor's office, advocating for multiple demands, including the capture of those responsible for Hadi's shooting.
Hadi, who is a potential independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the upcoming February elections, was shot in the head in broad daylight on December 12 in Bijoynagar.
According to reports, the assailants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at Hadi while he was traveling in a rickshaw in the Box Culvert area of Bijoynagar in Dhaka.
He is currently in critical condition and is being airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical treatment.
This attack occurred just a day after the Election Commission of the country revealed the electoral schedule, indicating that the 13th national parliamentary election, along with the July Charter referendum, is set for February 12 next year.
Bangladesh has seen a disturbing rise in violence and a declining law and order situation under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
