Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tel Aviv, Feb 25 (NationPress) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reflected on the significance of the 'Modi Hug' during a recent address, emphasizing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's personal embrace is truly one-of-a-kind.
"Earlier today, my wife Sara and I welcomed you at the airport. Just as you descended the steps, we embraced. Prime Minister Modi's personal embrace is significant. It’s known worldwide as the 'Modi Hug'," Netanyahu remarked while speaking to Israeli Parliamentarians during the official reception for PM Modi at the Knesset.
He continued, "When you embrace someone closely, it’s genuine, not merely a gesture. It’s what we call the 'Modi Hug'. I wish to reciprocate the hug on behalf of all Knesset members. This not only symbolizes our personal friendship but also illustrates the warmth between our two nations," said the Israeli PM.
As Prime Minister Modi arrived to deliver a historic address—the first ever by an Indian PM—members of the Knesset responded with a standing ovation and enthusiastic applause.
Netanyahu referred to PM Modi as "a formidable leader" on the global stage.
"Welcome to Jerusalem, my dear friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with your esteemed delegation. When I say dear friend, it's more than words; I could even say, a brother..." he added.
In his address, Netanyahu noted that trade between the two countries has doubled since PM Modi's last visit to the Mediterranean in 2017.
"Our trade has doubled, our cooperation has tripled, and our mutual understanding has quadrupled in ways that are hard to describe, but it’s been an extraordinary friendship," he stated.
"Typically, when heads of state visit the Knesset, we greet them warmly, and it’s always an exciting moment. But I must say, Narendra, I am profoundly touched by your visit today... I've never been more moved by the presence of a great friend of Israel, a true champion of the Indian-Israeli alliance," he further expressed.
Earlier, PM Modi and Netanyahu engaged in a private meeting at Ben-Gurion International Airport right after Modi's arrival for a two-day State Visit. The leaders discussed various topics aimed at enhancing bilateral relations and regional matters.
"This is a bond of genuine friendship. A great friend, my great friend," Netanyahu was seen saying in a video shared by his office during the meeting with PM Modi.
PM Modi expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome earlier that day and mentioned, "It’s a pleasure to be back in Israel after nine years. We discussed a wide array of topics aimed at strengthening our bilateral ties. Areas such as technology, water management, agriculture, and talent partnerships hold immense potential for collaboration. We also addressed key developments in the region," he posted on X after their meeting.
The private meeting occurred after Netanyahu and First Lady Sara welcomed PM Modi at the airport in a special gesture.
"You are a great leader," Netanyahu remarked after the two leaders shared a heartfelt hug on the tarmac.
Netanyahu also engaged in a lively discussion with PM Modi, noting that the color of Modi's pocket square perfectly matched Sara's saffron outfit.
"My wife Sara and I warmly welcomed our good friend, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, who has come for another historic visit to Israel. PM Modi visited Israel in 2017, and I later reciprocated with a visit to India that was truly remarkable. We enjoy a close personal relationship, converse often, and I believe our profound friendship is a testament to the strong ties between our two nations," Netanyahu posted on X.
"We are set to attend a festive reception at the Knesset, visit an innovation event in Jerusalem, and host Prime Minister Modi for a joint dinner. Tomorrow, we will visit Yad Vashem and have another meeting together with our teams, where we will sign a series of agreements in economic, security, and diplomatic areas to further enhance cooperation between Israel and India," he concluded.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his honor at being received by his Israeli counterpart and his wife at the airport, looking forward to talks that will bolster the friendship between the two nations.
"I have landed in Israel. It is a great honor to be welcomed by Prime Minister Netanyahu and Mrs. Netanyahu at the airport. I anticipate our bilateral discussions and fruitful outcomes that will strengthen India-Israel relations," PM Modi posted on X.
PM Modi’s last visit to Israel in 2017 marked a significant milestone, paving the way for enhanced cooperation in defense, agriculture, and water management between the two nations. Notably, Netanyahu had also welcomed PM Modi at the airport during that visit.
