What Actions is NHRC Taking Regarding Gym Operations?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, Feb 5 (NationPress) In a significant move, Priyank Kanoongo, a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), announced on Thursday that the Commission has dispatched notices to all state administrations, the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, and various sports authorities, requesting detailed information on the regulations governing the operation of gyms and fitness centres.
Kanoongo revealed that the NHRC has been alerted to multiple complaints regarding the sexual exploitation of women and underage girls by trainers in gyms and fitness clubs across the nation.
“We have uncovered alarming instances of sexual exploitation involving women, including minors, who have been targeted by gym trainers in various regions of the country. Additionally, we have received reports of inadequately regulated food supplements and excessive physical activities that endanger lives,” Kanoongo communicated to IANS during his visit to Bhopal.
Expressing particular concern over the targeting of Hindu women, Kanoongo emphasized that individuals from the Hindu community are being increasingly victimized by non-Hindu gym trainers nationwide.
“We are requesting comprehensive reports from every corner of the country. All submissions will be meticulously reviewed, and appropriate actions will be determined. We assure that those found guilty will face legal repercussions,” he asserted.
In a related incident in July 2025, Kanoongo had highlighted severe shortcomings in police investigations following the uncovering of a love trap and forced conversion scheme in Bhopal, where numerous female college students were allegedly exploited.
This issue came to light when one of the alleged survivors, a college student, who initially reported her case to the emergency police line, detailed that she had been raped by a Muslim man in Indore, yet her complaint was not treated with the seriousness it warranted.
In response, right-wing groups, including Bajrang Dal, had warned gym operators to dismiss Muslim trainers.
