Srinagar, May 1 (NationPress) The Director General (DG) of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Sadanand Date, arrived in Pahalgam on Thursday following the agency's takeover of the investigation into the terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, which included 25 tourists and a local individual, on April 22.
The NIA assumed control of the Pahalgam terror attack investigation on Sunday, as directed by the Counter Terrorism and Counter Radicalisation (CTCR) division of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), due to the serious nature of the incident.
A formal FIR has been initiated by the agency. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy group of the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for this heinous act.
While the NIA officially took over the case five days post-incident, its team had visited the attack site the day after April 22 to assist the Jammu and Kashmir Police in their investigation.
An official remarked, “Now, the NIA has officially taken over the investigation from the J&K Police and is proceeding independently.”
The NIA team is conducting a comprehensive analysis of the attack site, gathering forensic evidence to pinpoint those accountable for this tragedy.
This development arises amidst intelligence agencies compiling a list of 14 local terrorists who are actively operating in the Union Territory (UT).
Sources indicate that these individuals, aged between 20 and 40 years, are providing crucial logistical and ground-level support to foreign terrorists from Pakistan.
The identified operatives are reportedly linked to three major Pakistan-backed terror groups: Hizbul Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
Among these operatives, three are associated with Hizbul Mujahideen, eight with LeT, and three with JeM.
Sources have revealed the names of these individuals, including Adil Rehman Dentoo (21), Asif Ahmed Sheikh (28), and others.
“The identification of these local terror collaborators is part of a broader effort by agencies to dismantle support networks that enable cross-border terrorism,” sources stated.
Security forces have initiated coordinated operations, particularly in Anantnag and Pulwama districts, where many of the identified individuals are believed to be active.
Senior officials noted that these names are included in a larger intelligence dossier aimed at preventing further attacks and disrupting terror logistics in the Valley.
Previously, the NIA indicated in a press release that teams, led by an IG, a DIG, and an SP from the anti-terror agency, are interviewing eyewitnesses who witnessed the dreadful attack unfold in the serene Baisaran valley.
The eyewitnesses are being questioned in detail to reconstruct the sequence of events that resulted in one of the most devastating terror attacks in Kashmir. Investigating teams are meticulously examining entry and exit points for clues regarding the terrorists' modus operandi.
The NIA teams, supported by forensic and other experts, have thoroughly searched the entire area for evidence to unearth the terror conspiracy that precipitated this horrific attack.
