Perth, Oct 19 (NationPress) Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has been awarded his ODI debut cap by former captain and opener Rohit Sharma just before the series opener against Australia at the Optus Stadium this Sunday.
Interestingly, Reddy made his Test debut at the same venue in Perth last year during India's tour of Australia for the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy. At that time, he received his Test cap from renowned player Virat Kohli.
Since participating in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Reddy has only played four more Test matches: two during the recent series against the West Indies and two earlier in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England. However, his stint in England was hindered by an unfortunate gym accident in Manchester, leading to a left knee injury.
In the Australian squad, Matthew Renshaw and Mitch Owen have also received their respective debut caps and are ready to participate in their first one-day international for the current World Cup champions.
Renshaw has previously made his Test debut, first representing Australia at the age of 20. His entry into the ODI team comes nine years after his red-ball debut, following several impressive performances for the Bulls in the One-Day Cup and Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League.
Owen made his T20I debut in July in Jamaica, and he is expected to shine in the 50-over format as well.
While Shaun Marsh presented the ODI cap to Renshaw, Tim David handed over the cap to Owen just before the toss.
Following the conclusion of the three ODIs, India and Australia will clash in a five-match T20I series.
