Bhubaneswar, Sep 11 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, gave the green light to the highly anticipated Mahanadi Riverfront Development Project on Thursday, as confirmed by government officials.
As stated by the Chief Minister's Office, this transformative initiative is set to be executed over the next three years, spanning from the financial years 2025-26 to 2027-28.
The Odisha Water Resources Department is allocated a budget of Rs 240 crore from the state treasury to realize this ambitious plan during the upcoming financial years.
In his approval speech, CM Majhi remarked, "The Mahanadi River serves as the lifeline of Odisha. Numerous significant sites along the river will be transformed into vital environmental, cultural, and spiritual tourism hubs. These attractions are expected to significantly contribute to the state's economic growth."
The government has outlined several core objectives for this project, which include providing social and cultural amenities to riverside cities; enhancing infrastructure for water sports, amusement parks, science parks, and herbal gardens in collaboration with private entities; mitigating riverbank erosion and managing river structures; ensuring the cleanliness of river water by redirecting sewage discharge; supplying drinking water to nearby regions during droughts through effective water conservation techniques; and revitalizing surrounding areas through the sustainable utilization of local resources.
Furthermore, the government disclosed that riverfront development will be executed at two main sites: from Mandalia to Chaurapur in Sambalpur and along the Kuakhai and Kushabhadra rivers near Pandara in Bhubaneswar.
In the first stretch from Mandalia to Chaurapur in Sambalpur, the government plans to invest Rs 160 crore to create parking areas, jogging parks, selfie spots, landscaped parks, open gyms, upgraded bathing ghats, ritual ghats, themed plazas, shopping complexes, public restrooms, and improved river ghats.
Similarly, the second phase will involve enhancing the ghats with safety measures, creating scenic viewpoints with a ring road, installing floating jetties, lock gates, bridges, cafeterias, parking facilities, toilets, and internal pathways along the riverfront with an investment of Rs 80 crore from the state government.
