Aizawl, July 7 (NationPress) More than 4,000 individuals, including women and children, from Myanmar have recently sought refuge in Mizoram, taking shelter in two sites within Champhai district, as reported by officials on Monday.
According to officials from Champhai district in Mizoram, the influx of refugees began on July 3, triggered by escalating violence between two ethnic factions in Myanmar.
The most recent group of approximately 300 refugees arrived at Zokhawthar on Sunday.
Zokhawthar, a border town in Mizoram, is separated from Myanmar's Khawmawi village by the Tiau river, which delineates the boundary between the two nations.
The refugees hail from three villages in Myanmar's Chin state: Khawmawi, Rihkhawdar, and Lianhna.
Currently, these tribal refugees are staying with relatives in Mizoram or in government facilities.
Punte, the political advisor to Mizoram's Chief Minister Lalduhoma, visited Champhai district on Sunday and confirmed that the number of new arrivals has surpassed 4,000.
“The state government will ensure that, like the previous refugees, these new arrivals receive food and shelter,” Punte stated to IANS.
