Why Did the Lahore-Bound PIA Flight Have to Make an Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, Dec 20 (NationPress) — A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight, originally traveling from Jeddah to Lahore, was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after a technical alert was issued mid-flight. This incident activated the deployment of oxygen masks, leading to a state of panic among passengers, many of whom were Umrah pilgrims, according to local media reports on Saturday.
As per a spokesperson from PIA, flight PK-860 was slated to touch down at Lahore Airport at 8 pm but was redirected to King Fahd International Airport in Dammam due to a technical malfunction. The aircraft was carrying 381 passengers, as reported by leading Pakistani daily The Express Tribune.
The report also highlighted a similar occurrence last month when flight PK-859 from Lahore to Jeddah had to divert mid-air and land at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi due to a cracked windshield of the first officer’s cockpit. This incident caused considerable distress among passengers, and PIA officials indicated that the cracked windshield would be replaced before the passengers continued to Jeddah on the same or an alternative aircraft.
Earlier this year, another PIA domestic flight landed in Lahore with a missing rear wheel, raising alarms about a significant oversight in flight management.
Flight PK-306 took off from Karachi towards Lahore on March 13. Upon landing at Allama Iqbal International Airport, it was discovered that one of the landing gear wheels was absent.
According to a PIA spokesperson, this issue was noticed during a post-landing inspection.
Interestingly, despite thorough searches, the missing tire was never located.
Officials from Karachi International Airport confirmed that the wheel was intact when the plane departed from Karachi, asserting that the aircraft landed normally in Lahore.
