Calcutta High Court Receives PIL for Violence-Free Elections in West Bengal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 11 (NationPress) A public interest litigation has been submitted to a division bench at the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, aiming for free, fair, and violence-free elections in West Bengal, ahead of the critical Assembly elections scheduled for later this year.
The division bench, comprising Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen, has accepted the petition, which is set to be heard in the latter part of Wednesday.
This legal action was initiated just a day after the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) addressed the media in Kolkata, stating that the Election Commission of India (ECI) will enforce a zero-tolerance policy regarding poll-related violence, whether it occurs before, during, or after the elections.
According to the CEC, "The Commission has resolved to take stringent actions against anyone involved in such activities."
The public interest litigation cited previous instances of election-related violence, including threats to voters and opposition party representatives, as well as incidents involving the outrage of modesty of women perpetrated by 'political hooligans' in the state.
Among the demands outlined in the petition are the immediate deployment of central armed police forces (CAPF) in sensitive regions, installation of CCTVs, and provisions for videography at all polling booths.
The petitioner also highlighted the severe bloodshed and violence witnessed during the elections for the three-tier panchayat system in West Bengal in both 2018 and 2023, which resulted in multiple fatalities during those years.
This time, the ECI is particularly concentrating on preventing occurrences of pre-poll and post-poll violence in West Bengal, which marred the 2021 Assembly elections.
Recently, there were claims regarding attacks on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s 'Parivartan Yatra' at several locations in the state, allegedly carried out by activists of the Trinamool Congress.
