Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Oct 27 (NationPress) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with Maros Sefcovic, the EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, on Monday to discuss the ongoing negotiations for the India-EU FTA, which are currently at a pivotal stage.
During his visit to Brussels, Belgium, Goyal engaged in high-level talks with Sefcovic, as both parties are ramping up efforts to finalize a comprehensive, balanced, and mutually advantageous trade agreement as soon as possible.
“Our discussions aimed to accelerate the India-EU FTA negotiations. We also reaffirmed our mutual commitment to achieving a prompt, balanced, and beneficial agreement,” Goyal shared on the X social media platform.
His trip began with a meeting with Johann Wadephul, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany.
“We covered significant areas of mutual interest and growth, reinforcing the strong India-Germany strategic partnership and our collective pledge for an early conclusion of the India–EU FTA,” the minister reported.
This visit underscores India's unwavering dedication to enhancing engagement with the European Union, one of its primary trading partners, and to promoting an agreement that supports resilient supply chains, sustainable development, and a rules-based global trading framework.
“Following the momentum from the 14th round of negotiations held earlier this month, the Minister's visit is designed to provide strategic guidance and political motivation to the discussions,” stated the Commerce Ministry.
According to the ministry, talks are anticipated to address key aspects of the proposed FTA, including market access, non-tariff measures, and regulatory cooperation. The visit will also aim to assess progress made thus far and pinpoint areas needing further alignment.
This trip comes at a time when the India–EU partnership is gaining renewed strategic importance following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen earlier this year.
