Baghdad, July 13 (NationPress) The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has recently announced its intention to initiate the disarmament process, a significant milestone in the pursuit of enduring peace and stability, according to the Iraqi presidency.
This move towards disarmament is not only a pivotal and historic moment in the journey to conclude years of armed conflict but also aims to address the numerous security breaches that have resulted in innumerable civilian casualties, as stated by the Iraqi presidency on Saturday.
The initiation of this process is seen as a pathway to a more secure and stable future, enhancing the chances for peace and collaborative efforts throughout the region. The statement emphasized the necessity for all parties to fully commit to maintaining security, respecting sovereignty, and acknowledging the legitimate rights of all communities involved.
Furthermore, the disarmament is anticipated to strengthen the bilateral ties between Iraq and Türkiye, based on mutual respect, shared interests, and a unified vision for regional security and prosperity.
Earlier this week, Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the PKK, revealed in a recorded message from Imrali Island prison near Istanbul that the organization’s over 40-year armed struggle against Turkey for autonomy was coming to an end, with details of the disarmament to be promptly enacted, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
On Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan proclaimed the commencement of a "new chapter" in the country’s history with the initiation of the PKK's disarmament process.
“As of yesterday, the 47-year-long terror issue has commenced its phase of resolution. Turkey is closing a lengthy, painful chapter filled with grief and sorrow,” Erdogan expressed while addressing members of his ruling Justice and Development Party in Kizilcahamam district, Ankara Province.
A symbolic event took place on Friday, where a group of PKK militants ceremoniously burned their weapons in Iraq's northern Sulaymaniyah province.
“From now on, our dialogue will be face-to-face, free of weapons and violence, focused on unity and fraternity,” he stated.
The disarmament ceremony saw participation from representatives of Turkey's National Intelligence Organization, the Kurdistan Regional Government, Iraqi officials, security forces, civil society organizations, and members of the press, as reported by Türkiye's semi-official Anadolu Agency.
The PKK is classified as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union, having opposed the Turkish government for over four decades.
