Is PM Modi's 23rd Global Honour a Reflection of 'New India'?

Nicosia, June 16 (NationPress) The enhanced diplomatic ties and growing global influence of India were prominently displayed on Monday when the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, awarded Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Cyprus's prestigious honour – the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III – at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.

This award represents the 23rd international accolade received by PM Modi from a foreign nation, emphasizing his unparalleled position as a global leader who is dedicated to regional peace, development, and spiritual diplomacy.

During the award ceremony, Christodoulides expressed the significance of PM Modi's visit to Nicosia, marking a historic moment as it has been 23 years since an Indian Prime Minister last visited Cyprus. He extended gratitude to India for its long-standing support regarding the Cyprus issue and highlighted Cyprus's role as a reliable partner for India in the strategically important Eastern Mediterranean region.

He remarked, "As a member of the European Union (EU), Cyprus serves as India's gateway to Europe. With the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU commencing on January 1, 2026, we aim to strengthen India's strategic ties with the EU further," noted Christodoulides.

In accepting this honour on behalf of India’s 1.4 billion citizens, PM Modi conveyed his sincere appreciation to the President, the government, and the people of Cyprus. He dedicated this accolade to the enduring friendship between India and Cyprus, grounded in shared values and trust. He emphasized that the award symbolizes India's ancient philosophy of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' or 'the world is one family,' which informs India's vision for global peace and progress.

While the significance of PM Modi's visit to Cyprus strengthens the bond between Nicosia and New Delhi, experts assert that the Prime Minister's 23rd global honour signifies more than just an individual achievement; it highlights the rise of India's economic prowess, strategic clarity, and assertiveness on the global stage.

PM Modi acknowledged that none of these achievements would have been possible without the enduring trust of 140 crore Indians in his leadership, viewing this honour as a renewed commitment to enhancing and diversifying India-Cyprus relations.

He remarked, "For the first time, India's foreign policy is confidently 'India First' — clear, assertive, and consistent. The world is not merely observing; it is recognizing and appreciating this New India," commented a former diplomat.

This year alone, both Mauritius and Sri Lanka have awarded their highest civilian honours to PM Modi, further acknowledging his role in fortifying ties with neighbouring nations.
