Patna, Sep 8 (NationPress) A video featuring Tariq Anwar, the Congress MP from Katihar, has taken social media by storm. The footage depicts him riding on the shoulders of local villagers to navigate through muddy terrain while assessing the impact of floods and erosion in the Barari and Manihari Assembly segments.
Captured in the Dhuriahi Panchayat of Katihar district, the video shows the senior Congress leader being ferried over waterlogged paths by villagers as he visited areas severely affected by erosion near Shivnagar and Sonakhal.
Supporters were also present to ensure his safety during the journey.
In response to the backlash, Tariq Anwar stated, “I went to inspect the erosion site. The path was muddy and filled with water. The locals insisted on carrying me, and I couldn't decline their offer.”
Despite his explanation, the video has drawn significant criticism, with many questioning the appropriateness of an elected official being carried by constituents while assessing disaster-stricken areas.
Neeraj Kumar, a spokesperson for JD(U) and a member of the Legislative Council, criticized Anwar, describing the viral footage as embarrassing and inappropriate. “As a senior MP with extensive experience, such visuals convey a misleading message. You are there to help, not to be carried,” Kumar remarked.
He added, “During your administration, there was no disaster management protocol in Bihar. After Nitish Kumar took charge, measures were implemented to guarantee that relief supplies reach everyone.”
“In this social media era, every action gets amplified. Such displays will only lead to ridicule,” he cautioned.
With the Bihar Assembly elections approaching, even minor incidents are being blown out of proportion on social media, becoming significant political debates.
The NDA leaders are using Tariq Anwar’s “shoulder ride” incident to depict the Congress and the Grand Alliance as disconnected from the realities on the ground.
