Did Cong MP Support TN Minister’s ‘Pani-Puri’ Comments on North Indians?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) The derogatory comments made by Tamil Nadu's Agriculture Minister M.R.K. Paneerselvam against migrant laborers, particularly targeting those from Northern India, have garnered support from the Congress party on Thursday, which found no element that was 'objectionable or offensive'.
Congress MP Tariq Anwar from Bihar's Katihar district, while downplaying the crude 'pani-puri' comment from the DMK minister, labeled his statements as an 'undeniable truth' and highlighted that migration from Bihar is a pervasive issue.
"It was not his intention to offend. He was indicating that they travel from distant places to work as laborers. They come here seeking a means to survive. We all acknowledge this; migration is an extensive concern in Bihar," Tariq Anwar stated to reporters.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala criticized the Congress leader for aligning with the Tamil Nadu minister and questioned whether the Samajwadi Party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, and Tejashwi Yadav's RJD would also support the DMK, a significant ally in the INDIA bloc.
Earlier, the DMK leader stirred controversy and reignited the three-language debate by asserting that South Indians, proficient in both English and Tamil, land white-collar jobs domestically and internationally, whereas North Indians are arriving in the state to undertake menial tasks.
"Individuals from the north are coming to Tamil Nadu for jobs such as cleaning tables... they are here to work as construction laborers and pani puri vendors because they have only learned Hindi," the DMK leader allegedly said, setting the stage for renewed political conflict.
The offensive remarks prompted backlash in political circles, with the BJP expressing strong disapproval of the derogatory statements directed at North Indians, accusing the comments of fostering division and regional disparities in the lead-up to Assembly elections.
In contrast, the Congress party appeared divided on the subject, as its own MP from the state, Karti Chidambaram, expressed a differing viewpoint. "Laborers from other states are welcome in Tamil Nadu; they are secure here. Our economy relies on the workforce from other states," he told reporters outside Parliament.
“Such flippant remarks from individuals are irresponsible,” he added.
Paneerselvam’s unkind statements led to the party initiating damage control. DMK Lok Sabha MP TR Baalu explained to reporters that the comments were taken out of context and emphasized that the minister's intent was not to insult or belittle the migrant workers.
