Chennai, April 4 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Tamil Nadu on April 6. In celebration of Ram Navami, he will inaugurate the new Pamban Rail Bridge - India’s first vertical lift sea bridge - at approximately 12 noon and will flag off a train and a ship from the road bridge, observing the bridge's operations.

Following this, around 12:45 p.m., he will engage in darshan and pooja at the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram. At about 1:30 p.m., he will lay the foundation stone and dedicate several rail and road projects worth over Rs 8,300 crore in Tamil Nadu. He is also expected to address the audience during this occasion.

The Prime Minister will inaugurate the New Pamban Rail Bridge and flag off the new train service connecting Rameswaram to Tambaram (Chennai). The bridge holds deep cultural significance, as per the Ramayana, which states that the construction of Ram Setu began from Dhanushkodi near Rameswaram.

This bridge, which connects Rameswaram to the mainland, is a remarkable achievement of Indian engineering on a global scale. Built at a cost exceeding Rs 550 crore, it spans 2.08 km and includes 99 spans and a 72.5-meter vertical lift span that elevates up to 17 meters, allowing ships to pass smoothly while ensuring uninterrupted train operations.

Constructed using stainless steel reinforcement, high-grade protective paint, and fully welded joints, the bridge offers enhanced durability and lower maintenance requirements. It is designed for dual rail tracks to meet future demands. A special polysiloxane coating protects it against corrosion, ensuring its longevity in challenging marine conditions.

PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone and dedicate multiple rail and road projects valued at over Rs 8,300 crore in Tamil Nadu.

These projects encompass the foundation stone for the four-laning of the 28 km long Walajapet – Ranipet section of NH-40 and the dedication of the four-laned 29 km long Viluppuram – Puducherry section of NH-332, the 57 km long Poondiyankuppam – Sattanathapuram section of NH-32, and the 48 km long Cholapuram – Thanjavur section of NH-36.

These highways will enhance connectivity to numerous pilgrimage sites and tourist attractions, shorten travel distances between cities, and facilitate quicker access to medical colleges and hospitals. They will also empower local farmers to transport agricultural goods to nearby markets, thereby boosting the economic activities of local leather and small-scale industries.
