How is PM Modi's 'Act Fast' Approach Shaping Sikkim's Statehood Celebrations?

Gangtok, May 29 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 50th anniversary of Sikkim's statehood virtually, emphasizing his government's dedication to equitable regional growth through the 'Act East' strategy paired with an 'Act Fast' approach.

The event, titled Sikkim@50: Where Progress Meets Purpose and Nature Nurtures Growth, celebrated five decades since Sikkim became the 22nd state of India in 1975.

Initially planning to attend in person in Gangtok, the Prime Minister had to speak virtually from Bagdogra due to adverse weather conditions.

"I wished to be there personally for this golden jubilee. I set out early from Delhi but only managed to reach Bagdogra, where the weather prevented me from going further. It’s heartening to see such a wonderful gathering here," PM Modi stated in his speech.

During the virtual event, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the groundwork for several critical development projects, including a 500-bedded district hospital valued at over Rs 750 crore in Namchi district, a passenger ropeway at Sangachoeling in Pelling, Gyalshing district, and a statue of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Atal Amrit Udyan in Sangkhola, Gangtok district.

Moreover, he unveiled a commemorative coin, a souvenir coin, and a postage stamp in honor of the occasion.

Reflecting on Sikkim's evolution, PM Modi remarked, "Fifty years ago, Sikkim chose a democratic path. Alongside its unique geography, the people of Sikkim embraced the Indian ethos. The belief that when every voice is heard and every right safeguarded, equal opportunities for growth will follow is essential."

He added, "Today, I can confidently state that the trust of every Sikkimese family has continually strengthened, and the nation has witnessed Sikkim's remarkable progress."

Praising the state's balanced development, he continued, "In the past 50 years, Sikkim has become an exemplar of nature and progress... Such luminaries have emerged from Sikkim who have illuminated India's horizon."

Reiterating his inclusive development vision, PM Modi noted, "When I assumed office in 2014, I introduced the slogan 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas'. To elevate India to a 'Viksit' state, balanced development across every state and region is imperative. Each region of India possesses its uniqueness. Thus, our government has placed the North East at the forefront of development. We are advancing our 'Act East' policy with an 'Act Fast' strategy."

The Prime Minister also mentioned the recent Rising North East Summit held in New Delhi, where numerous industrialists and business leaders pledged new investments for Sikkim, anticipated to enhance local development and create job opportunities.

This day signifies a historical milestone in Sikkim's political journey. On May 16, 1975, Sikkim transitioned from a monarchy to full statehood in the Indian Union following a referendum.

This accession was marked by Article 371F, a unique constitutional safeguard designed to maintain the state's distinct ethnic identity, customs, and cultural traditions.

Over the last fifty years, Sikkim has emerged as a model of sustainable development and eco-friendly governance, receiving recognition for its green initiatives and environmental stewardship. The state government has planned a year-long celebration themed 'Sunaulo, Samriddha and Samarth Sikkim' to highlight its vibrant culture, rich traditions, and developmental achievements.
