Punjab BJP launches grassroots drive for 2027 Assembly polls
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally launched a structured grassroots mobilisation campaign ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with district- and mandal-level meetings already under way across the state. The party's election strategy — centred on drugs, corruption, and crime — was finalised at a State Executive Committee meeting held in Sangrur on Saturday, 17 October.
Key Decisions from the Sangrur Meeting
State BJP General Secretary Anil Sarin confirmed that the implementation of decisions taken at the executive meeting has begun. The party has resolved to prominently raise issues of drugs, corruption, and crime as the cornerstones of its public outreach ahead of the next state polls.
'Keeping these issues at the centre of its agenda, the party would undertake activities to strengthen public outreach, understand people's problems, and communicate its views and policies regarding the future of Punjab to the public,' Sarin said.
Meeting Schedule Across 36 Organisational Districts
District-level meetings are being conducted across the BJP's 36 organisational districts through 19 October. These will be followed by mandal-level meetings scheduled from 22 to 24 October.
The primary aim of these sessions is to ensure that resolutions passed and strategy formulated at the state level percolate down to district, mandal, and booth levels. Party workers are being briefed on their specific responsibilities, and a framework is being established to drive grassroots activity in the run-up to the elections.
BJP Attacks AAP Government Over Mansa Murder Case
Party legislator Ashwani Sharma used the occasion to sharply criticise Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over the murder of Parvinder Singh Jhota, an anti-drugs activist from Mansa. Sharma said the case has triggered widespread public outrage across Punjab.
'People are taking to the streets to express their anger, and the public is demanding answers from the Punjab government, particularly Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. However, instead of responding to the public's questions, the Chief Minister is heading to France. This shows that the Chief Minister is not at all serious about the matter and is merely going through the motions,' Sharma said.
Sharma added that it would have been more appropriate for the Chief Minister to address the public's concerns rather than travel abroad at this juncture.
What This Signals for 2027
This comes amid growing political competition in Punjab, where the AAP swept to power in 2022 with a historic majority, reducing both the BJP and the Congress to marginal presences. The BJP's early mobilisation — nearly two years before the polls — signals an intent to rebuild booth-level infrastructure that was significantly weakened after its alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal broke down. Notably, the party is framing law and order and the drug menace as its primary electoral planks, issues that resonate deeply in rural Punjab. Whether the grassroots drive translates into organisational depth will be tested in the months ahead.
