Majitha (Amritsar), May 13 (NationPress) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared on Tuesday that the state administration will hold accountable anyone, regardless of their wealth, involved in the despicable act of distributing spurious liquor that resulted in the tragic hooch incident in the Amritsar district.
During a media interaction after expressing condolences to the bereaved families affected by this tragedy, which claimed 17 lives, the Chief Minister emphasized that these fatalities are not mere accidents; they are murders driven by the avarice of certain individuals engaged in this crime.
Mann stated that these deaths represent clear acts of murder and assured that the state government will ensure that the perpetrators face the most severe penalties.
He remarked that the loss of 17 lives due to spurious liquor means the culprits should receive no leniency, as their actions were intentional. The Chief Minister also highlighted that such crimes typically require the backing of powerful politicians, adding that this aspect is currently under police investigation.
Mann mentioned that authorities have arrested 10 individuals, including the main orchestrator, and have identified the nexus involved in this crime.
“I want to make it clear that my government is dedicated to delivering justice to the affected families by securing exemplary punishments for the guilty,” he stated.
The Chief Minister revealed that the connections of this criminal network have been traced as far as Delhi, and every person involved will face justice.
He also disclosed that 600 litres of online methanol were procured by the criminals, likely for producing spurious liquor.
Mann assured that the police are investigating all angles of this incident to ensure that justice is served.
He informed that four officials, including a DSP, a Station House Officer, and two Excise Department officials, have already been suspended due to their negligence in preventing the sale and distribution of spurious liquor.
Despite the entrenched nature of this criminal network, which has thrived under previous administrations, Mann assured that the liquor mafia will be eradicated from the state.
The Chief Minister expressed sorrow that this hooch tragedy has robbed the families of their primary earners, noting that the circumstances surrounding these deaths mirror those of a similar incident in 2020 in Tarn Taran.
