Chandigarh, May 19 (NationPress) Asserting that the AAP government in Punjab has been entirely usurped by leaders from Delhi, resulting in a serious constitutional crisis, Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar called for a CBI investigation into the recent hooch disaster in Amritsar that resulted in 27 fatalities.
After meeting with Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Jakhar spoke with the press, emphasizing the necessity of a CBI inquiry into the hooch incident and the alleged connections of the government with the liquor mafia. The delegation, led by Jakhar, submitted a comprehensive memorandum to the Governor, requesting an investigation into the ties between AAP's Punjab leadership and the rampant liquor mafia in the region. They also urged that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) be tasked with examining these connections.
Included in the delegation were former minister Manoranjan Kalia, MLA Jangi Lal Mahajan, and party state General Parminder Brar, among others. They described the incident as an avoidable tragedy, stating that the quotas allocated under the liquor policy enacted by AAP in Punjab in 2022 mirrored Delhi's excise policy, warranting an investigation into who received illegal benefits and to what degree.
"This can be verified through stock registers, which should be examined to uncover the truth," the memorandum states. It also calls for an inquiry into the annual foreign liquor quotas assigned to contractors since July 2022.
In response to a question, Jakhar noted the CBI's ongoing investigation into Delhi's excise policy and urged that similar raids be conducted in Punjab. He advocated for the swift conclusion of the ongoing CBI inquiry, emphasizing the need to reveal the involvement of Punjab AAP leaders and ensure that those responsible face justice.
Jakhar further highlighted that the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) should be involved to trace illegal profits, and the scope of the CBI investigation should be expanded to encompass the hooch disaster in Amritsar.
The memorandum additionally requested an investigation into the allocation of official residences in Chandigarh to AAP's Delhi-based leaders and their participation in government meetings, alongside scrutiny of the rapid advancement of MLAs, ministers, and their relatives during the AAP administration in Punjab.
