Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai on Monday issued a pointed challenge to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, demanding that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader either produce evidence that Rai consumed non-vegetarian food in Ayodhya or resign from office. The escalation marks a sharp turn in a controversy that has gripped Uttar Pradesh politics over what critics have called a deliberate provocation during the sacred month of Sawan.

The Challenge and Counter-Challenge

'Let him provide evidence. If he can prove what he claims, I will resign from my politics — else he should resign,' Rai declared, raising the political stakes considerably. Rai went further, warning that if Yogi Adityanath failed to furnish proof, 'people will not accept Yogi ji at his math also; he will have to go back to his home in Uttarakhand.' The remarks were a direct response to criticism levelled by the Chief Minister at a public rally earlier the same day.

How the Controversy Erupted

The row began after a video surfaced showing fish being prepared at a banquet hall in Ayodhya, at an event that Rai reportedly attended. The footage drew swift condemnation from Hindu religious figures and several BJP leaders, who objected to the preparation and consumption of non-vegetarian food in Ayodhya — a city regarded as sacred by Hindus — particularly during Sawan, a month when many devotees observe strict dietary restrictions.

Rai's Defence: A Nishad Community Programme

Rai maintained that the feast was organised by members of the Nishad community, for whom fish is an integral part of traditional food and culture. 'Certainly all of us went there, we went to the Lord's court and had darshan there. Ram Nihal Nishad had organised a felicitation programme there. Now what are they making, what are they serving? And that dish is an integral part of the Nishad community. They prepare it themselves, and their job is to serve it to their people. We were invited, and I attended their programme,' he said. The Congress leader argued that his attendance at a community felicitation — following a temple visit and darshan at Hanumangarhi — should not be conflated with personal dietary choices.

Religious Identity at the Centre of the Row

Rai also displayed his Janeu — the sacred thread worn by many Hindus — while questioning the BJP's claims on religious identity. He challenged Yogi Adityanath and other BJP leaders to demonstrate their own adherence to Sanatan traditions, alleging that some leaders 'just wear orange clothes to cheat people.' The display was a calculated counter-move, framing the Congress leader's Hindu credentials against what he characterised as performative religiosity by the ruling party.

What CM Yogi Said

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, speaking at a public rally earlier on Monday, had trained his fire on Rai over the episode. 'You must have seen the conduct of the Congress state president yesterday. They went to Hanumangarhi for darshan and then went outside and enjoyed a fish feast. They keep chanting "Ram Ram" — there is a limit to shamelessness. Who asked them to go to the temple in the first place? Whatever they wanted to eat, they could have eaten it outside, outside Ayodhya. But this is their double standards. Even the chameleon would feel ashamed in front of them,' the Chief Minister said. The confrontation is likely to intensify as both sides dig in ahead of upcoming political cycles in the state.
