New Delhi, Oct 21 (NationPress) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh honored the martyrs during Police Commemoration Day at the National Police Memorial on Tuesday, commending the personnel for their dedication to preserving the integrity of society.

This day commemorates the heroic sacrifice of ten brave policemen who lost their lives in an ambush by heavily armed Chinese forces at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in 1959. Since then, it has been marked annually as Police Commemoration Day.

While addressing the police personnel, Singh stated, "This day is a reminder of the ultimate sacrifices made by our police and paramilitary forces. I pay my respects to those who have given their lives in service to protect the citizens of this nation."

He emphasized the interdependence of society and the police, noting, "A society can only advance towards peace and progress when it possesses a strong sense of security, justice, and trust. All our police personnel are responsible for fostering these elements."

"Conversely, the police can effectively serve the public only when there is societal cooperation and respect for the law. When the relationship between the police and society is built on mutual understanding, both can thrive. Thus, balanced collaboration between society and the police is crucial," he added.

Singh highlighted that every nation's security comprises two facets: external security and internal security. He pointed out that while the Armed Forces and Coast Guards handle external threats, it is the police who ensure internal safety by coordinating with intelligence agencies.

"If the Armed Forces defend the country, the police safeguard society. The Armed Forces maintain geographical integrity, while the police uphold societal integrity," he remarked.

"Both the army and police serve as pillars of our national security. Therefore, I firmly believe that regardless of the adversary—be it external or internal—anyone protecting India represents a united spirit. While the platforms of the Armed Forces and police differ, their mission is singular: defending the nation," he stated.

He noted that the balance between external and internal security has become increasingly vital as India aspires for 'Amritkaal' and 'Viksit Bharat 2047'.

"Today, crime has evolved into a multi-dimensional issue; it now threatens not just lives and property but also our privacy, identity, and trust," he remarked.

"The police must combat not only crime but also public perception. Stopping crime is a legal obligation, and maintaining societal trust is a moral duty. It is commendable that our police are fulfilling both their official and moral responsibilities effectively," said Singh.

"Thanks to the Armed Forces safeguarding our borders and the police ensuring safety in our communities, citizens can rest easy at night. They have faith that should any wrongdoing occur, the police will be there to support them," he concluded.
