New Delhi, Oct 19 (NationPress) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to honor the heroes on Police Commemoration Day at the National Police Memorial on October 21, as stated in an official announcement.
On October 21, 1959, ten courageous policemen made the ultimate sacrifice during an ambush by heavily armed Chinese forces at Hot Springs, Ladakh. This day has been commemorated annually as Police Commemoration Day.
In homage to the sacrifices made by police personnel and their crucial role in safeguarding national security, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the National Police Memorial (NPM) in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi on Police Commemoration Day 2018, as per the Ministry of Defence’s statement.
The Memorial comprises three significant elements: a Central Sculpture, the 'Wall of Valour', and a Museum. The Central Sculpture, a 30-foot granite monolith, epitomizes the strength, resilience, and selfless dedication of police personnel.
The Wall of Valour bears the inscribed names of martyrs, serving as a timeless tribute to the courage and sacrifice of police officers who have fallen in the line of duty since Independence.
The Memorial fosters a sense of national identity, pride, and unity among police forces, reinforcing their commitment to protect the nation, even at the cost of their lives.
The museum is designed to evolve as a historical exhibition on policing in India, serving as a pilgrimage site for both police personnel and citizens.
Open to the public daily except Mondays, the National Police Memorial hosts band displays, parades, and retreat ceremonies organized by CAPFs every Saturday and Sunday evening, commencing one hour before sunset.
Singh will oversee the ceremony on Tuesday and pay tribute to the martyrs. A joint parade featuring Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Delhi Police will take place.
In attendance will be the Defence Minister, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, Members of Parliament with police backgrounds, heads of CAPFs/CPOs, and other dignitaries, who will pay homage by laying wreaths. Retired DGs and officers from the police community will also participate in the event.
Besides honoring the police martyrs, Singh will address the gathering, reflecting on their sacrifices and the challenges faced in policing, according to the ministry.
The Defence Minister will also lay a wreath at the altar dedicated to the martyrs of Hot Springs.
In remembrance, CAPFs/CPOs will organize several commemorative events at the National Police Memorial from October 22 to 30, which will feature visits by family members of martyrs, police band displays, motorcycle rallies, runs for the martyrs, blood donation camps, and essay and painting competitions for children, alongside video showcases of the sacrifices and valor of police personnel.
Similar events will be conducted across the nation during this time.
