Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 20 (NationPress) In a significant step towards enhancing Kerala’s animal husbandry industry, the renowned Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (BRIC-RGCB) has inaugurated its inaugural veterinary medical laboratory services unit in Oyoor, Kollam district.
The multi-specialty diagnostic center, inaugurated on September 19 by J. Chinchurani, the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, alongside Prof. Chandrabhas Narayana, Director of RGCB, boasts cutting-edge facilities for an extensive array of veterinary clinical assessments.
Although primarily concentrated on veterinary services, the unit will also offer diagnostic services to the public at reasonable prices.
This facility was established in partnership with the Animal Husbandry Department, utilizing a building donated by the Velinelloor Village Panchayat.
“This facility will significantly bolster the animal husbandry sector, particularly livestock and poultry endeavors. We aim to establish more such units throughout the state,” stated Prof. Narayana, who mentioned that the Oyoor center will evolve into a central hub for research in animal husbandry and agriculture.
RGCB plans to soon set up collection and reporting stations in government veterinary hospitals and dispensaries across Kollam district.
In its subsequent phase, the research division will aim to prevent disease outbreaks in livestock and implement scientific measures in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry Department.
RGCB is already collaborating with the Animal Husbandry Department and the Kerala Livestock Development Board on initiatives to boost milk, egg, and meat production, alongside researching ways to enhance the shelf life and value addition of dairy and poultry products.
In addition to veterinary services, RGCB has expanded its public health laboratory network throughout Kerala.
In partnership with the State Health Department, it provides diagnostic services in government hospitals, including Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and General Hospital, Pala, utilizing a hub-and-spoke model that connects over 300 centers statewide.
Concurrently, RGCB’s Diagnostic and Research Laboratory at the Cochin Cancer Research Centre in Kalamassery is approaching completion.
Spanning 30,000 sq ft, the facility will deliver clinical services while functioning as a dedicated cancer research center—aimed at being a model for the entire nation.
