Dubai, March 2 (NationPress) After India secured their semi-final spot against Australia in the 2025 Champions Trophy with a 44-run victory over New Zealand, captain Rohit Sharma highlighted the decision to field Varun Chakaravarthy, who claimed 5-42, as an opportunity to explore the potential of the wrist-spinner.
During the match at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, Chakaravarthy, in just his second ODI appearance, spearheaded India's bowling effort on a slow black soil pitch, delivering an outstanding 5-42—the best bowling figures in the current tournament—leading to New Zealand's dismissal for 205 in 45.3 overs, which secured India the top position in Group A.
“Varun brings something unique; we wanted to see what he could contribute. We need to strategize for the next game, which presents a positive selection dilemma. If he performs well, he becomes quite challenging to read,” Rohit stated during the post-match presentation.
India's performance was further bolstered by Shreyas Iyer, who scored a commendable 79, forming a crucial 98-run partnership with Axar Patel, who contributed 42. “It was vital for us to finish strong. New Zealand is a formidable team, especially given their recent form. The partnership between Axar and Shreyas was essential after we lost early wickets. Their efforts set a solid total, allowing our quality bowlers to defend it. Momentum is key in such a short format. We aim to win and execute everything correctly,” he added.
India's upcoming semi-final match in Dubai will be against Australia, a rematch of the 2023 ODI World Cup final that India lost in Ahmedabad. Rohit expressed optimism regarding the clash with the team led by Steve Smith, stating it promises to be an exciting contest.
“Mistakes are part of the game, but rectifying them is crucial. It will be an intriguing match. Australia has a rich legacy in ICC tournaments. Our focus must be on executing our game plan on that day. I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully, we can secure a win,” he remarked.
Chakravarthy, awarded Player of the Match, confessed to feeling nervous initially but gained confidence as the game progressed, aided by encouraging words from his teammates that helped him secure his five-wicket haul.
“I was nervous at the beginning. Having limited experience in ODIs made me anxious. As the match unfolded, I felt more at ease. Virat, Rohit, Shreyas, and Hardik all spoke to me to help me stay calm. I learned I would be playing just the night before. I was eager to represent my country but felt the pressure. The pitch did not turn much, but bowling in the right areas was beneficial. The efforts by Kuldeep, Jaddu, Axar, and even our pacers showcased a complete team effort,” he explained.
New Zealand, on the other hand, will face South Africa in the second semi-final at Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday, with both teams traveling to Lahore together on Monday. Captain Mitchell Santner acknowledged that the pitch proved to be slower than anticipated during their chase.
“The wicket was slower than we expected. India managed to control the middle phase effectively. Shreyas played well, and Hardik finished strong. The spin was more pronounced than we had anticipated from previous matches here,” he stated.
“Having four quality spinners made it challenging for us. Our key focus was to secure wickets during the powerplay. Kane's form is a positive for us. South Africa is a strong team with four effective pacers suited for these conditions,” said Santner.
