Dubai, March 3 (NationPress) As India prepares to face Australia in the first semi-final of the 2025 Champions Trophy, captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged the allure of maintaining a bowling lineup featuring four spinners. However, he emphasized the importance of carefully considering the optimal bowling combination.
During the match at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, India utilized a strategy of four spinners, who collectively took nine wickets. Varun Chakaravarthy, the wrist-spinner, was particularly impressive, achieving remarkable figures of 5-42 in just his second ODI, which helped India secure the top position in Group A by defeating New Zealand.
“We must deliberate on whether we can effectively incorporate four spinners. If not, we will adapt. We aim to choose the bowling options that work best for us,” Rohit stated during the pre-semi-final press briefing.
When questioned about Chakaravarthy's selection for the semi-final against Australia, a rematch of the 2023 ODI World Cup final, Rohit responded, “He demonstrated his capabilities. It’s now up to us to determine the right combination. He performed exceptionally well and showed a unique skill set.”
“When he finds his rhythm, he can dismantle batting lineups and claim five wickets. It’s indeed a challenging decision, but a positive one. We’ll assess the situation and strategize against the Australian batting lineup,” he added.
Chakaravarthy had faced difficulties in the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup in Dubai, failing to take any wickets. However, his return was triumphant, showcasing his talent with a phenomenal five-wicket haul in just his second ODI.
Rohit highlighted that Chakaravarthy has improved significantly since 2021, particularly in terms of delivery accuracy and gaining valuable match experience across various formats.
“Regarding Varun, he’s become more precise than in his last appearance for India in 2021. He lacked experience back then, but he has since played extensively in domestic cricket, the IPL, and for India in T20Is and now ODIs,” Rohit noted.
“He has a deep understanding of his bowling. His unique bowling style has even left some of our batters puzzled. To summarize, he’s become more accurate, and his pace variations are excellent,” he elaborated.
Rohit concluded by recounting the moment when the coaching staff decided to replace Yashasvi Jaiswal with Chakaravarthy in the main Champions Trophy squad on February 12. “With Varun, we believed it was necessary to forgo a batsman, considering the tournament consists of only five matches. It’s improbable that the batsman would play unless there was an injury. We do not plan for injuries,” he described.
“If an injury occurs, we can always call them back. With Varun, we anticipated he would have a chance to play without any injuries in the team. While we acknowledge that we have four spinners, we fielded them in this match. Given the conditions observed in Dubai over the past two months and the amount of cricket played, we expected the surfaces to be slow. We monitored the ILT20 series held here and concluded that slower bowlers would be beneficial. We had a batsman available on the bench if necessary, such as Rishabh Pant. Thus, adding an extra spin option was a strategic decision,” he explained.
