Spielberg (Austria), June 27 (NationPress) George Russell maintained his incredible momentum after clinching victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, kicking off the Free Practice session for the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix with an impressive lap time of 1:05.542 at the Red Bull Ring. The Mercedes driver narrowly surpassed local hero Max Verstappen by only 0.065s, while Oscar Piastri from McLaren trailed by an additional 0.155s in third place.
Among the notable appearances were two newcomers from Formula 2. Alex Dunne, who leads the F2 championship, took the wheel of Lando Norris' McLaren, marking a significant milestone as the first Irish driver to take part in a Formula 1 weekend in over twenty years. Dunne showcased his potential with a commendable fourth-place finish, just 0.224s behind Russell’s top time. Ferrari also fielded Dino Beganovic in place of Charles Leclerc, although mechanical troubles hindered his performance.
Verstappen, who was working with a temporary race engineer due to Gianpiero Lambiase's absence this weekend, expressed concerns over his setup and faced a lock-up with his RB21. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda also encountered difficulties in maintaining consistency.
The session saw Lewis Hamilton interrupted by a gearbox malfunction, forcing him to return to the pits. Meanwhile, Beganovic’s Ferrari was elevated on stands for repairs. Several yellow flags briefly halted the action due to spins from Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon.
As the session progressed into its latter half with soft tyres coming into play, Russell’s earlier benchmark remained intact, even with reports of light rain approaching. The top five was rounded out by Pierre Gasly from Alpine alongside Gabriel Bortoleto in sixth and rookie Kimi Antonelli in eleventh.
With unpredictable weather on the horizon, teams are now focused on gearing up for FP2, set to commence later on Friday.
