Seoul, July 12 (NationPress) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov engaged in discussions with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Saturday during his trip to North Korea, as confirmed by Moscow's foreign ministry.
The ministry shared a photo via Telegram showing a smiling Kim holding Lavrov's hand with both of his. A separate video posted by the ministry depicted Kim welcoming Lavrov with a warm hug, indicating that Lavrov was officially received by the North Korean leader.
The meeting occurred in the coastal resort city of Wonsan.
Lavrov's visit to North Korea will extend until Sunday, after which he is scheduled to travel to China for a meeting with foreign ministers from Shanghai Cooperation Organisation member states, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.
Earlier that day, North Korea and Russia reiterated their strong diplomatic relationship during a conference of their top diplomats in the coastal resort city, as reported by Russian news agencies.
North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui met Lavrov in Wonsan for the second round of strategic discussions, just a day after Lavrov's arrival in the city, which recently opened a tourist zone, as per TASS.
In his opening remarks, Lavrov echoed Choe's prior characterization of their bilateral relationship as an “invincible military brotherhood,” referencing North Korean troops who fought alongside Russian forces against Ukraine in the Kursk region.
He further committed to enhancing the flow of Russian tourists to the resort city, including increasing flight options, according to TASS.
Choe reiterated her nation's backing for Russia, asserting their ties have reached an “unbreakable” level.
“The strategic choice and will of the DPRK government is to unconditionally and consistently support Russia's policy of safeguarding state sovereignty and territorial integrity,” TASS quoted her as stating.
DPRK is the official designation for North Korea—the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
This trip is significant as Moscow and Pyongyang have been deepening their extensive cooperation since Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un formalized a “comprehensive strategic partnership” during a summit in Pyongyang in June of last year.
Lavrov's previous visit to North Korea was in June 2024, accompanying President Putin for a summit with Kim in Pyongyang, where they signed a strategic partnership agreement focused on mutual support in cases of aggression.
