What Does Laos' FM's Visit to North Korea Mean Following October Summit?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Nov 12 (NationPress) The foreign minister of Laos has made a visit to Pyongyang, as reported by North Korea's state media on Wednesday. This visit comes approximately a month after the leaders from both nations engaged in summit discussions in the North during October.
A delegation headed by Thongsavanh Phomvihane, the foreign minister of Laos, arrived in Pyongyang the day before, extending an invitation from North Korea's foreign ministry, as per Yonhap, which cited the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The KCNA did not disclose additional information regarding the visit's objectives or its duration, but speculation suggests the delegation may address follow-up actions stemming from the summit discussions held between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith.
During the October talks, the two leaders reached an agreement to bolster bilateral cooperation on the occasion of the 80th anniversary celebration of the Workers' Party of Korea in North Korea.
The Lao president participated in various celebratory events in Pyongyang, including a prominent military parade, alongside other foreign dignitaries.
In their discussions, the leaders explored ways to enhance mutual cooperation, with the KCNA quoting their dialogue as reflecting an “expectation and conviction that the traditional relations of friendship and cooperation between the two sides will grow stronger.”
Kim expressed that Thongloun's visit symbolized his government's “full support and encouragement” for North Korea, while the Lao leader reaffirmed his commitment to nurturing the friendship and cooperation between the two nations, according to the report.
Following the summit, Kim hosted a reception to honor Thongloun's visit, where both leaders delivered speeches. However, the KCNA did not provide further specifics.
Thongloun’s previous visit to Pyongyang was in September 2011 when he served as deputy prime minister and foreign minister, accompanying then President Choummaly Sayasone for discussions with the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.
Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1974, North Korea and Laos have maintained amicable ties.
