Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 9 (NationPress) The apprehension of Kantaru Rajeevar, the tantri of the Sabarimala temple, in connection with the gold heist has signified a notable escalation in an investigation that is progressively ascending the institutional ladder.
What commenced as an inquiry into a sensational theft associated with one of Kerala’s most venerated shrines has now ventured into politically sensitive areas, intensifying speculation about the potential involvement of a minister.
By detaining an individual traditionally regarded as beyond the reach of normal criminal investigations, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has crossed a crucial psychological and symbolic boundary.
It is believed that investigators have proceeded with utmost caution, refraining from any public disclosure regarding the tantri’s alleged involvement until their custody was assured, highlighting the sensitivities linked to the case.
As of now, 13 individuals have been arrested, reinforcing the perception that the crime was perpetrated by a well-organized network rather than isolated individuals.
The probe has broadened further, as the Enforcement Directorate has initiated a money laundering case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, paving the way for examination of financial trails and potential asset attachments.
Political scrutiny has intensified amidst longstanding allegations by Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, who has consistently asserted that the involvement of CPI-M MLA and former Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran in this matter is “very clear”.
In response to the allegations, Surendran has filed a defamation lawsuit against Satheesan, which is currently pending in a court in the state capital.
In reaction to the arrest, state police chief Ravada Chandrasekhar clarified that the Kerala Police holds no direct role in the investigation, asserting that the SIT operates under the guidance and oversight of the Kerala High Court.
Meanwhile, the current Devaswom Minister and senior CPI-M leader V.N. Vasavan refrained from commenting on the situation.
When queried about the arrest, Vasavan stated he had “nothing to say” and walked away, a reaction that has fueled further political speculation.
As Kerala approaches a pre-election phase, any developments involving a sitting or former minister would have significant political ramifications.
While there is no official indication of a minister being under investigation, the arrest of the tantri has shifted perceptions regarding the depth of the probe, extending from ritual authority to political influence.
