In the men’s 55kg category, Shivam showcased his dominance throughout all three rounds against Turkmenistan’s Bezirgen Annayev, earning a unanimous decision.
Later, Mausam faced tough competition but managed to demonstrate his resilience against Kazakhstan’s Nurkabyluly Mukhit, securing a narrow 3:2 win.
The U19 and U22 Asian Boxing Championships serves as a vital platform for India’s emerging stars to exhibit their skills and determination against some of the toughest opponents in Asia. India has sent a robust squad of 40 boxers - 20 in each age group - combining seasoned champions with promising new talents who have excelled in domestic competitions.
However, not all was perfect for the Indian contingent in the U19 category, as Shubham faced a tough challenge and suffered a 0:5 loss to Kazakhstan’s Tortubek Adilet in the 60kg bout. Additionally, three Indian boxers are set to compete in the U22 category later today.
This tournament, organized by Asian Boxing in collaboration with World Boxing and the Thailand Boxing Association, has brought together 396 boxers from 26 nations. It features two age groups, U19 (born between 2007 and 2008) and U22 (born between 2004 and 2006), with both men and women competing under Olympic-style boxing rules.
The Indian team comprises a talented mix across both divisions. Leading the charge is three-time Asian Champion and two-time National Champion Vishvanath Suresh, a key athlete to watch. He is accompanied by national champion Sagar, National Games silver medallist Preet Malik, Khelo India gold medallist and senior nationals standout Suman Kumari, and Asian Youth Championship 2024 bronze medallist Yakshika.
They are joined by multi-time national medallist Nisha and Sub-Junior Nationals 2024 silver medallist Muskan, alongside several promising first-timers who have already made their mark at the national level.
For many athletes in this squad, it’s their first experience on an international stage, providing them with a unique opportunity to compete against the best young talent from across Asia.
