New Delhi, Jan 26 (NationPress) On Monday, Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla was awarded the Ashoka Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry honor in the country, by President Droupadi Murmu during the 77th Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path.
Shukla journeyed to the International Space Station as part of the Axiom-4 mission, marking his spaceflight in 2025. Following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, he became the second Indian astronaut to journey into space.

In conjunction with the 77th Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu endorsed the awarding of gallantry honors to 70 Armed Forces personnel for demonstrating exceptional courage, dedication to duty, and sacrifice in defense of the nation. Six of these awards will be granted posthumously.
The gallantry awards comprise one Ashok Chakra, three Kirti Chakras, 13 Shaurya Chakras (including one posthumous), one Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry), 44 Sena Medals (Gallantry) (five posthumously), six Nau Sena Medals (Gallantry), and two Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry).
In addition, Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair will be honored with the Kirti Chakra. He is a distinguished fighter test pilot and one of the four astronauts chosen for India’s inaugural human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan.
As an Air Force pilot, he has accumulated over 3,000 flying hours.
He also served as a backup crew member for the Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station. Since 2019, he has been training in collaboration with ISRO under the Gaganyaan program.
