Piyush Goyal deepens India-Singapore economic ties at 4th Ministerial Roundtable
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on 21 August reaffirmed India's commitment to strengthening economic partnerships with Singapore and the broader Asia region, holding a series of high-level meetings on the sidelines of the 4th India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable in Singapore. The engagements spanned agricultural exports, financial technology, and infrastructure cooperation.
Key Engagements at the Business Forum
Goyal addressed alumni and students of INSEAD — the non-profit international business school — alongside Singaporean entrepreneurs and Indian business representatives at the India-Singapore Business Forum. He held what he described as an insightful interaction with Professor Sameer Hasija, underscoring India's growth momentum and investment climate. In a post on X, Goyal noted he 'highlighted India's strong growth trajectory, investment opportunities, and the Government's efforts under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi to enhance the ease of doing business.'
Agri and Processed Food Push into ASEAN
A significant focus of the visit was expanding India's agricultural and processed food exports. Goyal participated in an APEDA-FairPrice roadshow-cum-in-store promotion, aimed at widening the footprint of Indian farm produce in Singapore and, through it, the wider ASEAN region and Australian market. Products being promoted include organic items, fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, dairy, cashew, rice, millet-based products, and region-specific specialities from across India. The minister also met Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry, Singapore, at the roadshow.
Fintech and Digital Economy Collaboration
Goyal held discussions with Sopnendu Mohanty, Group CEO of the Global Finance and Technology Network — a Singapore-based global advisory and investment firm — on deepening India-Singapore cooperation in financial innovation, technology, and the digital economy. 'We also exchanged views on how India's dynamic financial ecosystem and Singapore's global financial and technology network offer significant opportunities for greater collaboration,' Goyal said. The conversation reflects a growing bilateral interest in cross-border fintech linkages, an area where both nations have been active in recent years.
Infrastructure and Ministerial-Level Meetings
The minister also met Cindy Lim, CEO of Keppel Infrastructure, signalling interest in infrastructure sector collaboration. Goyal joined Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada at the 4th India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable — a structured diplomatic forum for bilateral economic coordination. This comes amid India's broader push to deepen trade ties across Southeast Asia, with Singapore serving as a key gateway to the ASEAN bloc.
What's Next
The outcomes of the Ministerial Roundtable and the APEDA roadshow are expected to feed into ongoing trade negotiations and export promotion strategies. Closer India-Singapore cooperation in fintech and agri-exports could open new corridors for Indian businesses targeting the ASEAN market, with Singapore's regulatory and financial infrastructure acting as a launchpad.
