Chennai, May 25 (NationPress) The historic fireworks industry in Tamil Nadu's Sivakasi has officially submitted a request for a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, aiming to safeguard its heritage, increase its credibility, and unlock new export opportunities. The application for the GI tag, categorized under 'manufactured goods', was filed with the Geographical Indications Registry by the Tamil Nadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers Association (TANFAMA), represented by advocate and IPR attorney P. Suganthi.

Known as the “fireworks capital of India,” Sivakasi and its neighboring areas such as Vemkottai, Virudhunagar, Sattur, Srivilliputhur, and parts of Kovilpatti produce more than 80 percent of the nation's fireworks. The industry flourishes in Sivakasi's dry climate, which is particularly conducive to firework manufacturing. The sector boasts a market value of around Rs 6,000 crore, with an annual growth rate of nearly 10 percent.

A representative from TANFAMA stated, “Numerous illegal and unregulated units are operating not only in Sivakasi but throughout the country. We are the pioneers in this field, and securing a GI tag will help differentiate authentic Sivakasi-made fireworks. It will also enable us to access financial assistance and expand into global markets.”

Intellectual Property Rights attorney P. Sanjai Gandhi highlighted that a GI tag could significantly reduce the prevalence of counterfeit and inferior fireworks in the market. “A GI tag adds credibility and serves as a protective measure against imitation products,” he noted.

The industry has historically faced safety issues, as illegal manufacturing operations have led to frequent fires and explosions. By obtaining a GI tag, the association aims to strengthen quality control and elevate safety standards.

As stated in the GI application, Sivakasi-produced fireworks serve purposes beyond celebrations; they are utilized by the armed forces for training and by certain airports to deter birds and prevent strikes. This industry’s origins trace back to pre-Independence with three foundational companies—National Fireworks (chain crackers), Kaliswari Fireworks (fire pots), and Standard Fireworks ('Lakshmi' bombs). By 1980, the number of factories had ballooned to 189, employing over 75,000 people. Currently, the region hosts more than 1,000 units. Despite its expansion, the industry encounters challenges such as environmental concerns and dwindling interest from younger generations in the family business. Manufacturers are optimistic that a GI tag will rejuvenate interest and secure the future of this iconic sector.
