Kozhikode, May 5 (NationPress) – Just three days after smoke enveloped the newly opened Rs 195-crore block of the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital -- which contains the casualty department -- smoke was once again detected on Monday afternoon.
The incident transpired while officials from the Electrical Inspectorate were conducting an inspection of the short circuit that occurred on Friday night.
The earlier event on Friday incited controversy as five patients tragically lost their lives. However, hospital officials clarified that the deaths were not attributable to the smoke, explaining that four patients were already terminally ill, and one had arrived deceased.
In the wake of the initial incident, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan instructed Health Minister Veena George to visit the hospital. Following her visit, she declared that a thorough investigation would be initiated and that patients would only be returned to the building once it is confirmed safe.
On Monday, Kozhikode MP M.K. Raghavan, who came to the hospital after reports of renewed smoke, mentioned that the hospital principal informed him that around 20 patients were present on the third floor at that time.
“I will highlight this issue to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as this building was financed through a Central government initiative. I will also reach out to Chief Minister Vijayan. A comprehensive investigation is urgently needed -- encompassing every phase from construction to commissioning,” stated Raghavan.
The hospital principal later clarified that the smoke was detected in an unused room on the sixth floor. The inspection team observed a spark during their checks, which led to a brief smoke incident that was quickly contained.
Meanwhile, Congress workers gathered at the hospital, calling for a detailed investigation, emphasizing that the majority of patients at the facility hail from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
BJP workers also expressed their concerns following Friday’s incident, while CPI(M) cadres remained relatively quiet.
In an attempt to alleviate tensions, Kozhikode Corporation Mayor Beena Philip, from the ruling CPI(M), appealed to the media to refrain from sensationalizing the situation and inciting panic among the public.
