Are Eviction Notices Being Issued by South Central Railways for Land Encroachment Worth Crores?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bidar (Karnataka), Jan 9 (NationPress) On Friday, the South Central Railway took decisive action by issuing eviction notices to individuals who are reportedly encroaching on railway property valued at several crores of rupees. These encroachments involve the construction of residential and commercial structures in the city of Bidar, Karnataka.
Officials have commenced procedures to clear approximately 40 properties that are under the jurisdiction of the Railway Department. The problematic encroachments are primarily situated in Gullar Haveli, adjacent to the Karnataka Electricity Board (KEB), as well as in locations like Nandi Colony and Jyoti Colony.
According to railway officials, numerous houses and shops have been unlawfully erected on railway land, resulting in significant encroachment over the years. The situation has escalated to a critical point, prompting the South Central Railway Division in Secunderabad to intervene with firm measures.
The railway authorities have issued notices instructing the encroachers to vacate the premises immediately. These notices have been affixed to the walls of the affected houses and shops, acting as a final warning prior to the initiation of eviction processes.
Officials have indicated that eviction will proceed in accordance with legal protocols if the occupants do not adhere to the notices. Additional measures are anticipated once the designated notice period concludes.
The Railway Department has reiterated its dedication to reclaiming the encroached land and thwarting any further unlawful occupation of railway property.
The department previously extended an opportunity for residents to submit documentary evidence on December 16, 2025, following a notice issued on November 28, 2025. However, the encroachers did not attend the scheduled hearing with the estate officer on December 16, 2025, nor did they provide any documentation to substantiate their claims on the encroached land.
The eviction notice has been issued under Sub-Section (1) of Section 5 of the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971, mandating that encroachers vacate the land within 15 days. If they fail to do so, they face potential eviction from the premises. The railway department has also cautioned that, if necessary, eviction may be enforced using force.
This decision has sparked concern among residents and business owners who have occupied the disputed land for years. Nevertheless, railway authorities maintain that the land rightfully belongs to the Railway Department and must be vacated to safeguard public assets.
