Election Commission Exempts SSC Officials from Election Duties in Bengal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 2 (NationPress) The Election Commission has decided to exempt School Service Commission officials involved in the state's teacher recruitment from any duties related to the Assembly elections.
This decision was commended by Justice Krishna Rao, who noted that the ongoing recruitment process for new teachers in 2025, following the cancellation of 26,000 SSC positions, will remain uninterrupted, according to court sources on Thursday.
On March 1, approximately 24 officials from the School Service Commission were designated as polling officers. Subsequently, the School Service Commission sought the intervention of the Calcutta High Court on March 25.
The Commission's attorney expressed concerns regarding the feasibility of completing the teacher recruitment process by the Supreme Court's deadline of August 31.
The SSC argued before Justice Krishna Rao's bench that 35 employees are responsible for all operations of the School Service Commission, including the teacher recruitment process.
Due to the assignment of 24 staff members to election duties, only 11 remain available to finalize the recruitment.
Currently, interviews are in progress for both teaching and non-teaching positions in schools. If these personnel are not returned promptly, meeting the Supreme Court's deadline of August 31 will be impossible.
The organization further asserted that the SSC operates as an autonomous body, and its personnel should not be reassigned for election-related tasks.
Today, the Election Commission notified the Calcutta High Court that the 24 School Service Commission officials appointed for election duties have been relieved from those responsibilities.
On April 1, the Additional District Magistrate confirmed that these officials were relieved from their roles as polling officers. Following this development, Justice Krishna Rao dismissed the case.
In a related matter, the Supreme Court annulled the employment of 25,753 teachers and non-teaching staff in the SSC recruitment corruption case in April 2025.
The apex court mandated that the recruitment process for classes 9 to 12 be restarted.
The Supreme Court has instructed the SSC to complete the new hiring by August 31 this year, having previously set a March deadline.
